G-Star NY Raw Couture and Benicio del Toro Partner at New York Fashion Week Show

New York / Amsterdam · February 18, 2009 /PRNewswire/ — G-Star's NY Raw handcrafted couture garments took center stage at the Hammerstein Ballroom tonight during the Fall/Winter 2009 runway show of the luxury denim brand. This season's NY Raw collection represented G-Star in its purest form - magnifying the brand's signature detailing to an unprecedented level. Each garment, created by the in-house atelier, blended the finest materials and sophisticated design, with extreme utilitarian functionality.

The G-Star product specialists transformed the traditional work wear fabric into a new level of high luxury, ready to be worn at every occasion - both on and off duty. Denim fur and varnished denim resulted from the innovative techniques used. Extensive bindings and buckles, high-stance necklines, oversized pockets and straps gave the collection a rugged, industrial feel. With their NY Raw collection G-Star proposed a fresh new silhouette for both men and women, featuring loose tapered forms and contrasting fabrics such as raw and heavily washed denim mixed with delicate silk and cashmere.
Raw Icon: Benicio del Toro

During the show, G-Star introduced its new Raw Icon: Benicio del Toro. The renowned actor, writer and director followed previous Raw Icon Dennis Hopper, who starred in G-Star's February 2008 runway show. The chemistry between the brand and the actor became apparent in 2008, when G-Star supported Steven Soderbergh's film project 'CHE'. The shared passion for film and art, as well as the mutual appreciation for each other's talent, authenticity and aesthetic proved to be a perfect match.

The Show

Classical music played live on two grand pianos, forming the backdrop for the opening of the show. The unexpected musical arrangement allowed guests to truly study the craftsmanship and the elaborate details of the NY Raw collection. To kick-off the latter part of the show, Benicio del Toro entered the runway in tailor-made G-Star reciting, as spoken word poetry, the lyrics of Joy Division's song 'Candidate'. G-Star chose the song based on its connection to the film Control from renowned Dutch photographer/director Anton Corbijn, who curated G-Star's Spring 2009 advertising campaign. Del Toro's art intervention transitioned the show from traditional catwalk to a G-Star finale.

A number of key celebrity and VIP guests took in G-Star's NY Raw collection. The front row consisted of Micha Barton, Zoe Saldana, Rufus Wainwright, Natascha Beddingfield, Demian Bichir, Santiago Cabrero, Alexandra Richards, Anton Corbijn (photographer new G-Star campaign), Toby Kebbell (actor in Anton Corbijns's film Control and in G-Star campaign), Emmanuelle Beart, Brandon Veta, Nate Parker and wife Sarah Parker, Miss J. Alexander, Matt Prokop, Alexandra Daddario, Nola Gerard Funk, Liam McMullan, Val Emmich, Amanda Setton, Robert Verdi, Lindsay Frimodt, Raven O, Michael Cohen, Laura Bickford, David Garrett, Shenae Grimes, Danielle Panabaker, Rodrigo Santoro, Tyson Beckford and guest Shabina.

G-Star hosted an intimate after show party at famed New York restaurant and club Butter.
