A Mad Scientist, Zombies And A Big Bug On The Loose In EARWIGS

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources; Avery Guerra / Robert Hood

Somewhere between the "Night of the Living Dead", "The Fly" and all the giant bugs on the loose flicks from the 1950s lies the plot for a new retro horror from filmmaker Bruce LeGrow entitled "Earwigs".

As you probably already know, we love retro monster films here at Monster Island News and luckily for us there seem to be alot of good ones being produced these days. "Earwigs" looks like it will certainly join the ranks of those films very soon.

So far "Earwigs" only exists as a trailer, made initially for a faux-trailer contest, but Legrow has big dreams of developing it into a full-length feature.

Legrow explains, "Earwigs was one of those ideas that seemingly came out of nowhere. There was a call to create a fake horror/ sci-fi trailer to screen at the local Silver Wave film festival. I had just moved out of an earwig-infested house, so I already had earwigs on the brain! It felt natural to make a monster movie about earwigs in a 50s sci-fi context. Earwigs seem to be the only bugs that didn’t have their own creature feature in those days. I am a big fan of the ’50s sci-fi film — “Creature from the Black Lagoon”, “Them”, and “Tarantula” in particular.

I would love to make Earwigs into a feature-length film. I am currently brainstorming ideas and writing a treatment. The trailer leaves things fairly wide open for a feature. This is good, but it creates a challenge on how to tell the story. I want Earwigs to be fun within its genre, rather than being campy and poking fun at it. I could write a script that could be made with a shoe-string budget, but I am currently going for the grand approach!"

Here is that aforementioned trailer:

Here is the plot idea for "Earwigs":

Dr Rutherford’s home life is in shambles. His wife is an abusive gossip who spends most of her time complaining about her husband on the phone. Amidst his current studies for the military, the doctor has been working overtime to develop a serum that would alter the human brain. The serum is intended to unleash the brain’s full potential for empathy and compassion. After a few failed attempts of using the serum on his wife, and selling it as a “love potion” to local hoodlums, the doctor stumbles upon the missing ingredient in his own basement laboratory. Earwigs!

Earwigs are the great mothers of the solitary insect world. Earwigs care for their young well after the second molt! Through a series of radical experiments, the doctor manages to extract the “caring gene” from the brain of an earwig. He carefully adds it to his powerful serum.

Inevitably a domestic dispute ends with Dr Rutherford kicked out of his own house. Now residing in the military laboratory, the doctor turns his sights to his sexy lab assistant Diana. He propositions that they each drink his serum and start a new loving life together. Diana declines and flees the scene. In a moment of desperation the doctor takes the serum and is strangely mutated into an earwig.

Dr Rutherford, now more earwig than man, lurks throughout the city. He has a sinister motive to capture women and create his own “perfect” family. After abducting Diana from a car at lover’s lane, the giant earwig creates an evil sanctuary in an abandoned barn on the edge of town. From here he uses his psychic powers to summon and command a vast horde of earwigs.

The earwigs crawl inside their victims, effectively turning them into mindless slaves of the earwig’s evil will. Fear and suspicion reign supreme amidst the plethora of strange occurrences around town. More young women are disappearing, and a manhunt begins for Dr Rutherford. Rumors abound that the recent phenomenon is part of an elaborate Communist attack on freedom. The military suspects Dr Rutherford is involved in this red plot, and begins an investigation. Meanwhile, Private Buck begins his frantic search to find and save his young love, Diana.

The town is in an uproar. It’s becoming impossible to determine who is under the earwig’s command. Greasers and nerds unite after a horrific incident at the sock-hop, and Private Buck finally uncovers the location of the giant earwig’s lair. The earwig threat is growing exponentially. A series of incidents finally prompts the army into action. Heavy artillery moves throughout the countryside. A massive stand-off occurs once the army descends upon the earwig’s lair. Will mankind triumph over the earwig’s lust for power? (source: Bruce LeGrow)

The things we men will do to try and get the attention of some woman. We buy them flowers, we take them out for expensive diners, we turn ourselves into gross half-human-half-insects..... and do they ever appreciate it ..... nnnnoooooooo.

Let's hope that Legrow can turn his little retro horror trailer into a full-blown monster movie. I sure would rather watch something like this than American Idol or most of the slop at the movies these days.

Universal Monsters Return Thanks To Diamond Select

Scary Monsters and Super Toys: Diamond Select Resurrects the Universal Monsters

Popular for going on 80 years now, the Universal Monsters are as undying in real life as they are in the movies. Since their debut, they've been reincarnated numerous times, through films, TV shows, model kits and especially toys, but their latest incarnation may be their most unspeakably beautiful. The Universal Select line of figures captures the world's most famous monsters in the 7-inch scale Diamond Select has made popular, with incredibly detailed bases and accessories. But if the accessories aren't as important to you, there's a more bare-bones line of Universal Monsters for sale at Toys "R" Us, with a third figure not available anywhere else. Following up on Series 1's Wolfman, Mummy and Creature from the Black Lagoon, we present Series 2, available in September 2011!

Frankenstein

Dr. Frankenstein’s Monster has been the subject of dozens of films, but the most famous is still the 1931 “Frankenstein,” starring Boris Karloff as the Monster. Created from the body parts of the deceased and given life through artificial means, the Monster was misunderstood from the start, causing it to turn on its master, and on humanity. The Select figure re-creates Karloff’s Monster in fine detail and includes an in-scale copy of the operating table that gave him life. (Table not available with Toys "R" Us version.)

Dracula

Sleeping in a coffin by day and preying on beautiful women by night, the man called Count Dracula is not a man, but a vampire! And he has traveled from the mountains of Transylvania to London in search of more unsuspecting victims. The 1931 Universal adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel remains the most iconic, and the Select figure captures his dapper dress, as well as his heard, but unseen, alternate wolf form, atop a gravesite base. It also features an exclusive brooding head sculpt completely different from the Toys "R" Us version. (Wolf not available with Toys "R" Us version.)

The Bride of Frankenstein

Only available in the Universal Monsters line, the Bride figure captures the female creation from the 1935 follow-up to "Frankenstein," "The Bride of Frankenstein." Picking up where the first movie left off, the sequel showed the monster's desire to be accepted, and his creator's attempt to provide him with a mate. But just because she was created through science like the monster, doesn't mean that she will be his Bride! (Only available at Toys "R" Us.)

THE MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD Worm On Girl Promo Pics

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Okay here is another topic that I had been talking about on Facebook. Is it my imagination or do all the promo photos from the 1957 movie "The Monster That Challenged The World" look like worm on woman intercourse?

Really! Look at the photo on the left and tell me what comes to mind? Be honest!

If that doesn't look like monster rape I don't know what does?

Then again .... maybe she consented?

Anyway .... pretty racy stuff for the 1950s.

Actually I had never seen the movie until last week and I honestly thought it was one of the better monster movies from that era.

I'll post a better review in the next few weeks .... I promise.

Here is the info:

The Monster That Challenged the World (1957) is a science-fiction monster movie, about an army of giant mollusks that emerge from the Salton Sea, California. Directed by Arnold Laven, the film starred Tim Holt and Audrey Dalton.

It was produced by Gramercy Pictures (not related to the former PolyGram division) and released by United Artists. The film is currently available on DVD as part of UA sister Metro-Goldwyn Mayer's Midnight Movies collection.

An earthquake has led to the hatching of eggs belonging to a prehistoric mollusk. The hatchlings emerge from the Salton Sea, escape into an underground aquifer, and proceed to terrorize the citizens of California's Imperial Valley. The navy is called in to battle these monsters. Navy Lieutenant Commander John Twillinger (Holt), teams up with several scientists to battle the threat.

Here are a couple more of the scandalous photos:

Filming Begins On Tim Burton's Dark Shadows

Source: Warner Bros

Filming begins this week on Warner Bros. Pictures' and Village Roadshow Pictures' "Dark Shadows," which brings the cult classic television series to the big screen under the direction of Tim Burton. The film's all-star ensemble cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath.

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Burton is directing and producing "Dark Shadows" from a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith, story by John August and Grahame-Smith, based on the television series created by Dan Curtis. Also producing are Oscar® winner Richard D. Zanuck ("Alice in Wonderland," "Driving Miss Daisy"), continuing his long association with Burton; Oscar® winner Graham King, ("Rango," "The Departed"), continuing his collaboration with Depp; Johnny Depp, Christi Dembrowski, and David Kennedy. The executive producers are Chris Lebenzon, Nigel Gostelow, Tim Headington, and Bruce Berman.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, Oscar(R)-winning production designer Rick Heinrichs ("Sleepy Hollow"), Oscar(R)-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood ("Alice in Wonderland") and editor Chris Lebenzon ("Alice in Wonderland"). The score will be composed by Danny Elfman.

"Dark Shadows" is being filmed entirely in England, both at Pinewood Studios and on location.

"Dark Shadows" will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Celluloid Philosophers - Shaun And Ed

Ed: Any zombies out there?
Shaun: Don't say that!
Ed: What?
Shaun: That!
Ed: What?
Shaun: The zed-word. Don't say it!
Ed: Why not?
Shaun: Because it's ridiculous!
Ed: All right... are there any out there, though?
[looking out of the letter-box, he sees an empty street]
Shaun: I can't see any. Maybe it's not as bad as all that.
[he turns his head and sees a pack of zombies]
Shaun: Oh, no, there they are.

- Shaun (Simon Pegg) / Ed (Nick Frost) - Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Bonus:

Ed: What's the plan then?
Shaun: Right.
[cuts to dream sequence]
Shaun: We take Pete's car, we drive over to Mum's, we go in, take care of Philip - "I'm so sorry, Philip" - then we grab Mum, we go over to Liz's place, hole up, have a cup of tea and wait for this whole thing to blow over.
Ed: Why have we got to go to Liz's?
Shaun: Because we do.
Ed: But she dumped you!
Shaun: I have to know if she's all right!
Ed: Why?
Shaun: Because I love her!
Ed: All right... gayyy... I'm not staying there, though.
Shaun: Why not?
Ed: If we hole up, I wanna be somewhere familiar, I wanna know where the exits are, and I wanna be allowed to smoke.
Shaun: Okay.
[cuts to dream sequence again]
Shaun: We take Pete's car, go round Mum's, go in, deal with Philip - "Sorry, Philip!" - grab Mum, go to Liz's, pick her up, bring her back here, have a cup of tea and wait for this whole thing to blow over.
Ed: Perfect!
Shaun: No, no, no, no, no, wait, we can't bring her back here.
Ed: Why not?
Shaun: Well, it's not really safe, is it?
Ed: Yeah, look at the state of it.
Shaun: Where's safe? Where's familiar?
Ed: Where can I smoke?
[Shaun and Ed pause then slowly make a realisation]
Shaun: [cuts to dream sequence a third time] Take car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil - "Sorry." - grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold?
Ed: Yeah, boyyyeee!
[Shaun and Ed clang their weapons together]

Shaun: They still out there?
[Ed checks, revealing two zombies scratching at the window]
Ed: Yeah. What you think we should do?
Shaun: Have a sit down?

New Images And Casting News For DRACULA'S ORGY OF THE DAMNED

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: James Baack

Two vampire stories in a row! Today certainly seems like it's turning into a regular "blood drinking fiesta" doesn't it?

When I opened my email box this morning I was pleasantly surprised to find a batch of brand new photos from James Baack's latest horror opus "Dracula's Orgy of the Damned".

Okay, I know the word "Orgy" in there may give you the idea that what Baack is filming up there in Chicago is something for late-night Cinemax viewers. I assure you that is not the case. In actuality "Orgy of the Damned" is a homage to the classic horror films produced by the British production company Hammer in the 1960s and 70s.

Sorry, it's not a skin-flick .....

Production on this one is starting to wind down as Baack explains, "We still have five more scenes to shoot and we will wrap it up. We have been editing like crazy hoping to get a release date by this Halloween.

The movie looks great so far and we are confident that any fans of vampire films will sink their fangs into this."

Baack also let me in on some news about shooting locations and a new addition to the production.

"We are also very excited to bring aboard English actor Timothy Pollard to the cast.

Tim is the official actor to play Robin Hood at Notingham Castle ( http://www.timpollard.com/). We are very excited and pleased to have him aboard to play a part shot in England in the dungeons of Nottingtham Castle early in the film. We are also having some footage shot next month in actual Transylvania in the Carpathian mountains for the opening credits."

Sounds like "Dracula's Orgy of the Damned" will be much more dynamic than Baack's previous film, "The Bloody Rage of Bigfoot."

Our hats off to you James, keep up the good work!

Here are the for mentioned photos from "Dracula's Orgy of the Damned":

Asian Girl On Girl Vampire Action In EMPRESS VAMPIRE

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Avery Guerra / Empress Vampire via Facebook

It has been a long time since I posted anything about a kinky, cheesy, horror flick so when I found a link in my inbox from my pal Avery Guerra about a little film called "Empress Vampire" I decided to once again take a walk on the naughty side.

From watching the trailer one can only assume that the film is nothing more than a showcase for plenty of hot Asian lesbian scenes mixed in with a fair amount of blood and gore. Who would expect anything less? Right?

Though this type of film is not necessarily my cup of tea, I have learned through the years that MIN readers really dig vampires ..... especially sexy Asian ones who feed off of sexy white girls.

Consider this one community service.

Your Welcome ...

Here is the plot:

The revelry of an upscale Halloween party is shattered by gunshots when two armed robbers attempt to fleece the well-to-do patrons of their money and jewels. A diminutive cloaked figure steps out from the crowd and despite being shot multiple times, effortlessly dispenses with the thieves. These superhuman feats do not go unnoticed and when news of them reaches the Secretary of Defense, Arthur Hayes (Tom Cochran), he dispatches FBI Agent Dan Higgins (Beau Nelson) to track the figure down.

Higgin’s quest turns ominous when he discovers he is attempting to track down a vampire, but not just any vampire - the Empress Vampire (Ange Maya), the source from which all other vampires descended!

Higgins then enlists the aid of Ivor Helsing, a vampire hunter (Garrett Brawith), and Ariana , a psychic (Laura Contenescue), who are also intent on tracking the Empress down.

The Empress Vampire is no ordinary vampire. She craves more than mere blood. She is carnal as well as carnivorous and sexually exhausts her prey before satisfying her need for their blood. As she kills, the Empress savagely mutilates her victims and toys with their entrails.

But is she the evil one, or is she being sought by a more malevolent force?

Not for the squeamish or easily-offended. Empress Vampire is a journey into darkness – the darkness of ancient evil, the darkness of human greed, and the darkness of the perversion of the Empress Vampire.

Hey .... you had better see this one or some crazy ..... hot ... Asian vampire chick will come find you and pull out your eyes!

Here is the trailer plus some more photos from "Empress Vampire":

Godzilla To Invade Washburn University This Weekend!

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Washburn University

I just got tipped off to a great Godzilla movie festival at Washburn University (Kansas) this weekend. It's actually a Godzilla film festival with a touch of Frankenstein thrown in for good measure. Now I don't expect all of you to start packing for Topeka immediately after reading this, but if you are close by you should check it out.

Here is the press release:

The big green guy is stomping back to Washburn University for the sixth annual Godzilla and Friends Festival on May 6 and 7. No admission is charged and the public is invited to this event that celebrates the cultural history behind the giant creature in all of its bizarre diversity.

Events are planned 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 6, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 7, with film and trailer screenings, various commentaries, contests and giveaways in room 112 of the Henderson Learning Resources Center.

A contest to see who can put forth the best imitation of the monster Japanese film star will be Saturday afternoon. All films will be shown in English.
The new edition of the festival includes the theme of “Monster Mash,” in which numerous giant monsters compete for screen time and challenge one another.

The schedule is:

May 6 (Friday)

7 p.m.: “Destroy All Monsters,” (1969), features monsters from the earlier series plus creatures who warranted their own feature films, such as “Varan, the Unbelieveable.” Previews of other monster films will be shown.

May 7 (Saturday)

“Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster,” (1964). Created by Toho Studios, this giant creature is an unusual adversary who was resurrected many times to Battle Godzilla. Here he meets Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra in what would be the fifth entry in the initial Godzilla (Gojira) series.

“Monster Mash” entry I: “House of Frankenstein,” (1944), starring Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney Jr. and includes the Wolf Man, Count Dracula, the Frankenstein Monster, the mad doctor and the hunchback.

“Monster Mash” entry II: “How to Make a Monster,” (1958). Teenage Frankenstein and Werewolf are at the mercy of a studio make-up artist gone mad. A cheapie black and white movie that ends in a firey color climax.

Bill Tsutsui, author and University of Kansas professor, will share his experiences during the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

A surprise feature film will conclude event.

The Godzilla and Friends Film Festival VI is hosted by KTWU TV and is made possible with support from the Washburn University office of international programs, office of multicultural affairs and Center for Diversity Studies, the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Kansas and donations from audience members.

In conjunction with the festival, KTWU will show their own giant monster movie, “The Giant Gila Monster,” at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7. This oddball offering from 1959 is a “Godzilla” knock-off in which a giant gila monster roams the desert and attacks trains and people before finally being stopped by a band of industrious teenagers. The special effects are of the low-tech variety with miniature trains being burned with match-size flames.

Mr. Lobo Hams It Up On The Set Of PLAN 9

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Photos By: Dixie Dellamorto

I ask you, what could be scarier than a horror host with an axe?

Well ..... probably a lot of things, but America's number one horror host took full advantage of some free tine on the set of "Plan 9" to ham it up in front of the camera.

What? ...... no not Elvira? Why would you think this was about her?

No, I'm talking about Mr. Lobo from the nationally televised late-night horror movie showcase "Cinema Insomnia", who plays a major role in the remake of the Ed Wood classic (?) "Plan 9 From Outer Space".

Yes, as I mentioned last week, John Johnson of Darkstone Entertainment is knee-deep in working on the film which also stars Brian Krause, Matthew Ewald, James Rolfe, Caitlin Hill, Matt Sloan & Aaron Yonda.

As for Lobo, well he has landed the coveted role of The Amazing Criswell. Who is Criswell you may ask? Well he was a well-known psychic from the 1950s who was featured in the intro to the original "Plan 9". This time around Lobo's Criswell will do more than just introduce the film, as these photos illustrate, he will be one mean, bad-ass, zombie-killing machine.

Step aside Shaun, move to the rear Ash, Lobo's in town!

Elvira .... pfft, what does she have that Lobo doesn't? Besides those! Hmm some people prefer substance over gazongas ..... well some.

Here are the pics from the set:

New Images From PLAN 9

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Darkstone Entertainment

What is today ..... picture day? First I get some new images from "Harry Potter" and "Green Lantern", now I find that there are new images from "Plan 9" in my inbox.

"Plan 9" you may ask? Yes, it is a modern remake of the Ed Wood classic (?) "Plan 9 From Outer Space."

Why would anyone want to do such a thing? Well, there are presently two "Plan 9" remakes out there ..... yes, I'm serious ...... the other being "Grave Robbers From Outer Space." "Plan 9" is a serious attempt to expand on the original concept of the first film to create a serious horror film and the other is a campy remake. Pick your poison.

Anyway "Plan 9" is about to wrap on April 25th so film maker John Johnson of Darkstone Entertainment (the production company behind 'Plan 9') is pulling out all the stops so that the fans out there can learn just about all there is to know about his film.
